Rockville’s Biotech Corridor serves as the ecosystem’s anchor, hosting a cluster of more than 120 life sciences companies
The Capital Region has secured its position as the #3 top U.S. biopharma cluster on Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News’ (GEN) 2026 national ranking for the fourth consecutive year. GEN’s national list of biopharma hubs is based on the evaluation of industry criteria including patents, National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, venture capital funding, laboratory space, and employment.
The Capital region’s national ranking highlighted the strategic position near key federal agencies and Washington, DC. Anchored by the City of Rockville, the Biotech Corridor serves as a primary employment and innovation driver in Montgomery County which hosts over 350 life sciences companies that employ approximately 26,000 workers. This concentrated ecosystem accounts for 65% of Maryland’s total biotechnology workforce, providing a robust pipeline of talent for innovation to thrive at every stage of growth. The region’s talent along with recent investments and acquisitions in the Biotech Corridor contributed to the Capital region’s national standing, including:
- Samsung Biologics Entry: In a significant transaction for the local market, South Korea-based contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) Samsung Biologics acquired the former Human Genome Sciences campus from GSK. The facility marks the corporation’s first facility, retaining 500 jobs.
- Bora Pharmaceuticals Acquisition: Taiwan-based Bora Pharmaceuticals announced plans to acquire MacroGenics’ manufacturing facility, scaling Bora’s North American contract manufacturing capabilities.
- AstraZeneca Investment: AstraZeneca’s $2 billion manufacturing facility investment to projected to be operational by 2029 will add 300 jobs to the region’s ecosystem.
