Life science talent continues to thrive in the Washington D.C./Baltimore area according to 2023 CBRE report

The greater Washington region ranked 3rd among 25 U.S. metros for life science talent in 2023

According to the 2023 U.S. Life Sciences Research Talent report from CBRE, a leading commercial real estate company, the Washington D.C./Baltimore area has been ranked among the top three regions for life science talent. Out of the twenty-five markets reviewed across the nation, the greater Washington region secured the 3rd position this year. The first and second spots were taken by the Boston/Cambridge and San Francisco Bay Area, respectively.

In the previous year (2022), the Washington D.C. metro area was ranked 2nd among the top U.S. metros for life science research talent. The report highlights that while New York/New Jersey, the most populous metro in the country, houses the majority of life science researchers, the Boston/Cambridge, San Francisco Bay Area, and Washington D.C./Baltimore regions each have less than half of New York/New Jersey’s population but a comparable number of life science researchers. This suggests a higher concentration of life science researchers per capita in these metros due to the intensity of life science research activity.

CBRE’s report also reveals that the greater Washington area has a significant number of graduates specializing in biotechnology. Additionally, it points out that markets producing a large number of specialized biological and biomedical sciences research talent generally receive substantial funding from the National Institutes of Health.

The U.S. Life Sciences Research Talent report provides a comprehensive analysis of various data, including the total number and per-capita concentration of researchers and annual college graduates with life sciences-related degrees in each market. Governor Moore announces $15 million available for small business relief

The $15 million investment is the latest through the State Small Business Credit Initiative

Annapolis, Md., May 15, 2023 – Governor Wes Moore announced a $15 million commitment to minority-led small business lender Lendistry to provide relief to Maryland small businesses. The commitment is the latest investment through the State Small Business Credit Initiative, through which Maryland is deploying up to $198 million in federal relief.

“As the first Community Development Fund Institution to begin offering loans through Maryland’s State Small Business Credit Initiative program, Lendistry will unlock opportunities for small businesses to grow and expand in the state,” said Gov. Wes Moore. “Through this infusion of funds, the state can work with lenders to reach even more businesses that need investment to support their success.”

The initiative is administered by three state agencies through nine programs. Through the Department of Housing and Community Development’s Neighborhood BusinessWorks Loan to Lender program, Lendistry will be able to lend up to $250,000 to small businesses that are owned and operated by Socially and Economically Disadvantaged Individuals; Very Small Businesses; or are in Community Development Financial Institutions Investment Areas.

“The Neighborhood BusinessWorks program is a great resource to stimulate investment in communities that are prime for revitalization,” said Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development Secretary Jake Day. “The funds allow us to go above and beyond the department’s regular lending capacity and serve even more businesses across the state.”

Maryland was the first state in the nation to submit its State Small Business Credit Initiative deployment plan to the U.S. Treasury Department, and was one of the first five states to be approved for the funding.

Lendistry is a minority-led small business and commercial real estate lender that is dedicated to providing economic opportunities and progressive growth for borrowers and their communities. In 2022, Lendistry became the nation’s only African American-led Small Business Administration-designated Small Business Lending Company.

ince Lendistry was established in 2015, it has deployed more than $8.9 billion in small business loans and grants across the country, and supported more than 595,000 small businesses. It has allocated more than 74% of the funding to minority-owned businesses.

“Lendistry is committed to giving small businesses the best possible chance at fair and responsible financing they need to grow, and I’m confident this partnership will make a significant impact,” said Lendistry CEO, Everett K. Sands. “State Small Business Credit Initiative programs help compensate for common shortfalls that underserved and undercapitalized business borrowers experience. Combining these programs with our accessible fintech platform will make a positive difference for Maryland communities that have been ready to grow for a long time.”

State Small Business Credit Initiative program funds are also administered by the Maryland Department of Commerce, and the Maryland Technology Development Corporation. To learn more, visit open.maryland.gov/ssbci.

Intellian invests $100 million to develop satellite communication technologies in Rockville

Left to right: Signe Pringle, Maryland Deputy Secretary of Commerce; Eric Sung, Intellian CEO & President; Marc Elrich, Montgomery County Executive; and Tea-Sup Byeon, South Korea Ministry of SMEs & Startups Deputy Minister

The Advanced Development Center is Intellian's first and only U.S.-based research and development center

Rockville, Md., Apr. 26, 2023 – Intellian Technologies, a leading global provider of multi-constellation, feature-rich, future-proof satellite user terminals and communications solutions, announced their $100m investment into the research and development of satellite communication technologies at the official opening of their Advanced Development Center (ADC) in the City of Rockville in Montgomery County, Maryland.

Intellian’s role within the satellite communications industry has become increasingly essential in the past 20 years. Their gateways land traffic from communication satellites, with Intellian’s user terminals empowering consumer connectivity to these satellite networks.

ADC is Intellian’s first and only US-based research and development center, hosting a number of top industry talent for the product development of phased array antennas and user terminals. Growing to a team of over 70 by Q4 2023, this investment will boost economic growth and foster innovation within the state of Maryland and locally in Montgomery County. Developments in satellite technology are making satellite networks far more competitive than ever before and are opening the door to truly global, high bandwidth coverage for everyone. This will empower the most remote communities with access to connect online, and enjoy broadband speeds without the need of a lengthy infrastructure project to install fiber networks.

In the United States, the crucial need for connectivity is recognized by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The FCC’s Combatting Digital Discrimination task force aims to promote equal access to broadband across the country, regardless of zip code, income level, ethnicity, race, religion, or national origin. The FCC’s Rural Broadband Accountability Plan is tasked with bringing more connectivity to rural areas, where difficult terrain and long distances between households discourage private broadband investment. In Maryland, this need is also recognized with the One Maryland Broadband Network initiative.

“Establishing our Advanced Development Center in Montgomery County, Maryland is a key strategic decision for us,” says Eric Sung, Intellian’s CEO and President. “The ADC is ideally situated in the heart of ‘Satellite Valley’, with many of our key satellite network partners close by. With an ever-increasing interest from enterprise, government and maritime customers for phased array antennas, the $100m commitment to the development of this product portfolio is a key point of growth and expansion for Intellian. We look forward to strengthening Maryland’s position as a focal point within the global satellite communications industry.”

“We are pleased to welcome Intellian to Montgomery County, Maryland” said Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich. “The satellite manufacturing industry is valued at over $16.2 billion currently, and is projected to reach $27.3 billion by 2031. Montgomery County is home to NIST, as well as a vast and talented pool of engineers, scientists and experts in this industry. This workforce continues to attract dynamic and innovative companies like Intellian to Montgomery County. Intellian’s Advanced Development Center will further enhance our reputation as ‘Satellite Valley.”

About Intellian Technologies, Inc.

Established in 2004 in South Korea, Intellian is a worldwide leading provider of satellite antennas and terminals, with a mission to empower connectivity which in turn powers the world. Learn more at https://www.intelliantech.com/en/home#

MasPanadas triples space in Rockville for major expansion

The 12,000 square foot acquisition at 601 Dover Road is adjacent to its current facility on Southlawn Lane in Rock East District

Article originally published by Washington Business Journal on March 27, 2023

MasPanadas is readying to move into larger digs that will position it to triple the amount of frozen empanadas it produces at its Rockville headquarters.

The company, which does business as Latin Goodness Foods LLC, recently took delivery of another 12,000 square feet at 601 Dover Road, adjacent to its 6,000-square-foot facility on Southlawn Lane, and is awaiting permits from the city of Rockville to begin building out the space.

Once that’s completed, likely during the third quarter, MasPanadas hopes to ramp up from five tons of product a week to roughly 15 tons, per founder and CEO, Magarita Womack. To help fuel that growth, it recently closed a $1.5 million seed funding round with backing from Angeles Investors and Union Kitchen, the food business accelerator and retailer where MasPanadas got its start in 2017.

“The line has really grown with popsicle sticks and duct tape, and now we can be so much more efficient,” said Womack, whom the Washington Business Journal recognized as its small business owner CEO of the Year in 2022.

The increased production will include both private-label empanadas that it makes for such retailers as MOM’s Organic Market, Streets Market & Cafe and Whole Foods Market and sells under the stores’ brands, and its own MasPanadas-labeled products. Up to now, the company has been mostly focused on private-label sales, said Womack, but plans to deploy cash from the new funding round to get its branded frozen empanadas on more store shelves. The goal, she added, is to increase annual revenue from roughly $6 million to $10 million.

MasPanadas has five different products on store shelves, including chicken and vegetables, beef and vegetables, and pizza empanadas, and another eight for private-label sales.

It is one of a number of startups to successfully emerge from retail and food business incubator, Union Kitchen, with others including Compass Coffee, Snacklins and Swapples. Its latest fund was oversubscribed by around $25,000 — a swell of support for which Womack is grateful as the company navigates its next phase of growth.

It’s an awkward time in its growth cycle as MasPanadas is no longer a tiny startup but not quite established enough to easily line up construction financing, Womack said. Her initial lender was reluctant to extend financing until the company showed the kind of increase in sales it projected in its business plan — but that bump was conditioned on completing the expansion for which it was seeking funding.

Womack said MasPanadas’ landlord at 14672-B Southlawn Lane advanced the company enough to cover tenant improvement costs while it works to close on its construction financing. In addition to the physical expansion, the company is investing about $1.8 million in equipment.

“We’re kind of in that preteen phase, where you’re not quite a startup, but you’re not quite a small business either,” she said.
