MWBC Seeking Business Counselor/Trainer

The Maryland Women’s Business Center is taking applications for the position of Business Counselor/Trainer for Montgomery County.




Job description:

TITLE: Business Counselor/Trainer, Montgomery County

ACCOUNTABILITY:   Reports to the Managing Director, MWBC

STATUS: Full-time



  • Responsible for identifying, organizing and scheduling 30-40 workshops per year on a wide range of business topics working with volunteer trainers and partners
  • Work with Program Manager on room/facility reservations, registration processes, and delivery of workshops
  • Teach occasional courses and workshops on business plans and related topics
  • Collect data and evaluations from participants and work with Program Manager to ensure data is reported properly
  • Refer clients to training classes on a weekly basis – coordinate activities with Program Manager
  • Work with Program Manager & Office Manager to publicize our workshops through a flyers, eblasts, social media, external websites and listserves


  • Provide professional management and technical assistance counseling to the small business community in areas of financial analysis, business plan development, marketing analysis and development of marketing strategic plans, contract procurement, and loan packaging
  • Coach small- to medium- sized business owners in the development and strategic growth of their existing business
  • Identify and recruit volunteer professionals to offer client counseling and monitor volunteer counseling sessions to ensure high quality counseling standards are met
  • Organize peer counseling groups
  • Identify mentors for clients as appropriate


  • Maintain library of resources to assist clients and work with Program Assistant to ensure that information is updated on the website
  • Maintain referral lists


  • Meet objectives as stipulated in the annual performance goals
  • Timely completion of forms, documentation and reports as required by the Managing Director include:
  • Monthly Reports (Scorecards) – completed and due by 2nd Friday of each month.
  • Client File Updates – submitted on an ongoing basis (Proper documentation & database update)
  • Write articles occasionally in area of expertise
  • Identify, support and supervise interns
  • Maintain consistently high client satisfaction levels as evidenced by client evaluations.
  • Conduct community outreach activities as appropriate through occasional networking and speaking engagements to promote the activities of the MWBC and create collaborative partnerships to further the mission of the organization
  • Provide information, training, and assistance in area of expertise to other counselors as needed
  • Perform other duties as required and appropriate to the objectives of this position and the needs of the organization
  • Adherence to the REDI/MWBC policies and procedures, the strategic plan, and the MWBCs most current proposal goals


  • Undergraduate degree in Business or a related discipline, prefer an MBA
  • Five years of relevant business and program management experience
  • Business consulting or coaching experience
  • Proven track record of creating, launching, and managing successful projects within a corporate environment
  • Entrepreneurial experience highly desired
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, oral and written
  • Public speaking skills and/or training experience
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills
  • Ability to work with diverse groups
  • Interpersonal skills to interact with a variety of clients and staff
  • Familiarity and experience with women’s business ownership issues
  • Spanish language skills a plus
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite

Compensation:  $50,000-60,000 with benefits.

Benefits for full-time position:  Paid holidays and annual leave, a 3% matching contribution to a 401K plan, health care benefits, and parking or public transportation re-imbursement.
