Make Your Spring StartRight!
If it’s Spring, it must be time for the MWBC’s StartRight! Women’s Business Plan Competition!
Every year the Maryland Women’s Business Center (MWBC) provides an opportunity for women entrepreneurs to win seed funding to support the launch and growth of their businesses. Here at the MWBC, we like to seize every opportunity to support and promote the important role women entrepreneurs play within our state’s economy.
StartRight! is a regional business plan competition that was established in 2004 by Rockville Economic Development, Inc. (REDI) to encourage women entrepreneurs to write their business plans, leading to stronger companies. In 2013, the MWBC, an initiative of REDI, assumed responsibility for StartRight!, expanding the scope to include support for women as they develop their plans through counseling, coaching, and specialized workshops.
StartRight! awards cash and in-kind prizes totaling over $13,000, with a Grand Prize of $5,000 in cash for winning business plans!
To qualify, the business must be at least 51% women owned, less than 3 years old, and located in Maryland. The women who join our competition receive more than the opportunity to win a cash prize – they also receive valuable coaching and feedback on their business plan!
Over the years we have had a number of businesses come through the competition and move on to become successful entrepreneurs. But don’t just take my word for it, check out Kellee James founder of Mercaris, Hetty Irmer founder of Four Corners Counseling, and Aliyah Hardy founder of Pilates Center of Rockville. Each of these women have a fantastic story to tell about their journey through the various stages of their business lifecycle, and we are proud to be a part of their success!
This year, we are expecting to fund even more fascinating businesses, and hope that you will support our program and join us in celebrating their award at the Power Conference on September 7, 2017. Join us in stepping up for women entrepreneurs, so we can continue to help businesses ‘start right’ with StartRight!
